Instructions

For collecting and sending feathers

1. Collect feathers

You can send different types of feathers for analysis.

Points of attention:

  • Sending MORE feathers is preferred in case repeat analysis is required
  • Do not touch the tips of the feathers
  • Feathers must be freshly picked. Fallen feathers (molting feathers) cannot be used

Chest Feathers

Pick 5 feathers or more from the chest of the bird. It is preferable to send more feathers in case repeat analysis is required. Feathers must have a clear tip.

Feathers that are ‘wet’ must be dried in a dark place before sending.

The sex of your birds can also be determined from eggshells or blood.

Eggshells

DNABird can also determine the sex of your newborn bird as the DNA of the chick is in the eggshell. Allow the egg to dry well before sending it. The eggshell must not be contaminated with anything ex. the feces of the parent birds.
