General questions

My bird does not have a ring or chip. Can I have a DNA sex determination done?

Yes, that is possible. You can also enter characteristics of the bird into the order form, such as their species or features of their appearance ex. their colour. This information will be included on your certificate in order to identify your birds.

How long does it take before I receive the results of the DNA test?

You will receive a confirmation email when we receive your feathers. After receipt of the samples and payment, we immediately start with the DNA analysis. Results will be sent via email within 3-5 business days following receipt. The certificate(s) will be included in this email.

Which bird species can DNABird perform sex determination?

DNABird can perform sex determination on the following species: parrots and parakeets, toucans, pigeons, cardinals, partridges, pheasants, chickens, passerinas, songbirds, seabirds, crows, starlings, thrushes, birds of prey, owls and ratites.

At times, it may be necessary for us to ask for reference material. We may request feathers from birds that have already been confirmed as male and female.

Collect and send feathers

How old must my bird be before I can pluck their feathers?

The DNA of the bird remains the same throughout their life. As long as the bird has feathers, they can be plucked and used for sex determination. Only feathers with a clear tip (nothing covering or surrounding it) are usable.
If you want to know the sex of a newborn chick, it is also possible to send their eggshell. We advise you let the egg dry well before packing for shipment.

Where do I put the feathers in?

Put the feathers in a sample bag or a paper envelope. One sample bag or envelope must be used for each bird. You will receive new sample bags from DNABird with every order you place.

Can I save pulled feathers?

Yes, you can keep pulled feathers if they are dry and do not contain blood.

It is advised to keep them in a dark and dry place.
